Installation
aws2xls is extremely easy to install and use. After downloading the aws2xls.exe file to a convenient directory, the program is immediately ready to use.
Double click on the program name or icon to run it. This opens a DOS box that asks for the path to the AWStats data file that you want to export to Excel :

You can enter an absolute or a relative path to the selected AWStats data file.
The names of the AWStats data files are generally like this :
awstats022006.domain-name.com.txt
where 022006 shows the month and the year of the reported period and where domain-name.com is the domain name of the analyzed web site.
After you have entered the path, aws2xls will show the path to the Excel file it will create in the same directory as the AWStats data file and ask for a confirmation :

You have to enter “yes” or “y” to continue. aws2xls will read the AWStats data file and create the Excel file. When this is done, it will display a message confirming that the file has been created.

Press “Enter” to close the window.
The Excel file has been created.
Advanced Technical Details
The following limitations apply to this version :
- the number of lines of the AWStats data file may not exceed 2 000 000.
- the number of rows in a report is limited to 1000 in aws2xls and to 65000 in aws2xls/PRO. Note that all values in the AWStats data files are read and sorted, but only the 1000 (or 65000) most significant values are available in the report.
- aws2xls 0.05j is an evaluation version that will expire on August 31, 2008.

This looks like a great and useful program!
I downloaded it with no problem and copied it to a folder on my Desktop, and also copied a 100 line Awstats text file to the same folder.
It appeared to run OK and said it had created an Excel file, and, indeed, it did create a file with an xls extension.
However, Excel cannot open the file, and says that the file is corrupt.
I’m using Win XP2 on a Dell Inspiron 8600, Excel 2003, English version, that comes with Office 2003.
I am anxious to try it, and hope this is easily solved.
Thanks,
CJ

aws2xls does not convert the web server log files to Excel files. aws2xls converts AWStats data base files to Excel files. The AWStats data base files are generally called awstats042007.internetofficer.com.txt or something similar.
I hope this clarifies the matter.

where do you find the data base files?

The AWStats data base files are in the data directory. The data directory is defined by the DirData tag in AWStats config file.

Do you need to have Excel installed on the server it is to convert rhe file? The program says it is unable to read the file. It is named awstats082007.www.rdiamondgroup.com.txt

Excel is not needed to convert the files.
In most cases, this message means that aws2xls does not find the file, because the path to the file is not correct. When you only enter awstats082007.www.rdiamondgroup.com.txt, aws2xls looks for the file in its own directory.
Please try again with the full path to the file. Example:
d:\your_dir\subdirectory\awstats082007.www.rdiamondgroup.com.txt

This tool is really useful.
I wonder if there is the possibility to enter the path as a parameter from the command line…
Question moved to our aws2xls forum: path as command line parameter.
