Hi:

I've recently assumed responsibility for AWStats and I'm not very familiar with it. A client sent me an email inquiring about the data for the metric websites. She said that she noticed the monthly metrics reported in the last few weeks for 2007 are varying. For example, data for October 2007, the total that she retrieved today was was 4,961. Tuesday (4/24), the total was 4,964. And, last November, they retrieved results of 7,547. This is for the same month of October 2007.

Each month of last year varies from their original retrievals by anywhere from 20 (January) to 2,500 (October). She stated that she did an extensive audit in the last few weeks and she did delete several documents; but that should not affect the numbers.

Do anyone have any idea why this might be happening? Any help will be greatly appreciated.

There is no reason to get different data for October in the AWStats reports whenever you run the stats in November 2007 or in April 2008, except if the AWStats configuration file was changed or if the AWStats version was changed.

About the configuration file: it can be used to exclude some pages or some hosts (visitors) from the stats.

About the AWStats version: when updating to a new release of AWStats, you also update the lists of known robots. Thus some hits and page views could pass from the “visitors” sections to the “robots” sections.

I just remembered that, in another topic, you wrote:

My problem is resolved. It looks like the executables got corrupted, somehow. I had the backup team restore the awstats directory structure from a previous backup.

It would be interesting to compare the AWStats database file of October 2007 that you have now with the “same” database file from a previous backup. Maybe the same happened to the database files as to the AWStats executable ?

The executables were corrupted recently; this discrepancy happened back in 2007. After researching, I think it might be due to some missing logs at the time. I'm not 100% sure; however, the server did run into space issues and a lot of the cron jobs did not run successfully. Over a period of time, they were rebuilding websites. I don't have the details; but I was told that it was around the Oct/Nov/December timeframe.

Thanks for all of your suggestions and ideas. Going forward, we will monitor it closely and see if varying results occur again.
