I followed a howto at my own risk and although the page is running on apache

it will not update and so cron is filling my inbox at a fast rate

here is the howto-author does not respond…..l'f=9

 here is the cron message

 Subject: Cron <www-data@selfless> [ -x /usr/share/awstats/tools/ ] && /usr/share/awstats/tools/

 Create/Update database for config "/etc/awstats/awstats.postfix.conf" by AWStats version 6.95 (build 1.943)
>From data in log file "/usr/share/awstats/ standard < /var/log/mail.log|"…

sh: cannot open /var/log/mail.log: Permission denied
Phase 1 : First bypass old records, searching new record…

Searching new records from beginning of log file…

Error: Command for pipe '/usr/share/awstats/ standard < /var/log/mail.log |' failed

Setup ('/etc/awstats/awstats.postfix.conf' file, web server or permissions) may be wrong.

Check config file, permissions and AWStats documentation (in 'docs' directory).
Error: SiteDomain parameter not defined in your config/domain file. You must edit it for using this version of AWStats.

thanks for any feedback

Your error message means that either /var/log/mail.log  does not exist or that you do not have the right to read it. Additionally the SiteDomain parameter in your AWStats config file is not defined.

I home this helps.

mail.log  exists, but it is not publicly readable.

-rw-r–r– would make it readable.

The permissions of  are correct.
