Hi everyone,

I have this problem. I would like to use my linux server running ubuntu 8.04 to analyze data from W3C logs on my Windows server. Is this possible? If yes can anyone point any good tutorials or any help at all as I am not sure how this is done and I would not like to mess up either server as they are critical. I have googled for hours to no end.

Currently we use WebTrends on a windows box and analyze data from the Windows Server running IIS 6.

Any help will be much appreciated.
Thanks,
idipous

Hi and welcome,

This is definitely possible.

You can either process the log file with AWStats on the Windows server and generate the AWStats database files there and then send them to the Linux server to generate the reports or you can use FTP to copy the log files from the Windows server to the Linux server and do the entire AWStats processing under Ubuntu.

If you have already an AWStats config file for the Ubuntu server, you will need a second config file for the IIS server. It will contain a LogFormat directive specifying the IIS format.

Thanks for you answer.

I have installed awstats on the linux system.

I would like to avoid installing it on the Windows system but if there is no way to avoid it I at least do not have to produce the reports on the windows system thus burdening it.

Is not there any way by sending the raw logs on the Linux server to produce the reports entirely?

Thanks

This is exactly what I was trying to explain when I wrote:

What I called the “log files” is what you called the “raw logs”. 😉
