Your Follow Me plug-in sounds exactly like what I need to trouble shoot a web app.   I would like to be able to figure out how a user of a system got something to occur that shouldn't have.

I've followed your instructions for set up, which seem simple enough.     I believe that Follow Me has been installed properly.   When I view my Hosts report in awstats, I now see a column for "Follow Me".  When I click on the "Zoom" link I get a page that has been created by Follow Me.  However there is no data in it.

I know that awstats is configured to read my logs correctly as I can see all of its reports.  I've tried getting Follow Me reports on several host IP addresses they are all empty.  I can see though from awstats that these same IPs show many pages and hits.

Can you help?  Thanks.

Hi Tom,

As you did not mention error messages, I assume there was no error message in the page generated by Follow Me. So it is likely that there is no hit from this visitor in the log file read by the plugin. The default is that the plugin only reads the current log file (i.e. the one specified by the LogFile directive in the AWStats config file). You can add other files in the plugin directive. There are examples under Advanced Technical Details in the plugin installation instructions.

If this does not clarify the issue, please paste here the LogFile directive and the Follow Me directive as they appear in your AWStats config file.

Hi,

In a simple configuration, the plugin reads the log file defined by the LogFile directive in the AWStats config file. If there is no hit from the user you are looking for in this log file, you will get an empty page.

The plugin will read several log files if they are specified in the LoadPlugin directive as explained under Advanced Technical Details  in the plugin installation instructions.

In many cases, you might want that the Follow Me plugin uses other log files than the one defined in the LogFile directive. The reason can be that you want to follow visitors who came to the site several days ago or because, at the time you use it, the LogFile directive points to a log file that has not yet been parsed by AWStats.

If this is not clear to you, paste here the LogFile directive as it appears in your AWStats config file.

Thanks for your reply!

LogFile="/var/log/apache2/access.log"

and

LoadPlugin="follow_me_by_internetofficer /var/log/apache2/access.log.1"

are in my configuration.

I tried to reproduce your setup and your problem, but with no real success:

- if I take a visitor 12.34.56.78 who only visited the site on November 2 and if the log file paths used by the plugin (/var/log/apache2/access.log + /var/log/apache2/access.log.1, in your example) do not include the hits of November 2, then I get an empty page without error message when I click on "Zoom". This is as it is supposed to be. I might add a warning message in a future release.

- when there is a permission issue with any of the log file paths used by the plugin, I get "Error: Couldn't open server log file "/var/log/httpd/access_log.1" : Permission denied" which is self-explanatory.

- when any of the log files used by the plugin does not exist, I get "Error: Couldn't open server log file "/home/boff_AWS/logs/MAIN/access_log.2" : No such file or directory" which is also self-explanatory.

I would be interested in trying it myself on your system. If this is possible, please send an email to awstats@internetofficer.com . Thanks.

Thanks again,

We cannot let you try on the system. But to fix this issue I would be happy to provide you with details. Let me know which details you need. I installed it on debian5 with php5. Awstats is working fine except for the follow me plugin. JAWStats is also working fine after a little tweak.

And yes, the plugin and installation is pretty straightforward, so I expected no problems.

You can become very specific about technical details if needed, I know my way around in the world of IT (WebSphere)

Need more info, just let me know.

Regards,

Bob

Okay. Let's try. Pick up a user and click on "Zoom" :

  • what is the exact URL of the window that is generated when you click on "Zoom" ?
  • open a log file used by the plugin where this user appears and paste here a few lines from the log file with hits of the user.

I am willing to help, but I don't think I can do more from here without having access to a system where the problem is present. Sorry.

Hi Bob,

A slightly modified version of the plugin is available for download. When no relevant data is found in the parsed log files, a clarification message is generated. Hope this helps understand what happens in your setup.

The problem you were facing (plugin not showing any data when LogFormat=1 was selected) has been solved. Please download version 1.20 of the plugin. Thanks.
